Of course, it is almost impossible that someone can be richer than a king or that someone can be schooled in every grace. The third stanza can also be considered as an exaggeration when it mentioned that Richard Cory is richer than a king. The idea of Richard Cory being rich was also repeated especially in the third stanza. Line 5 and 6 are examples of repetition used in the poem. The author also used pavement to imply that the speakers are from the lower class (, 2014). Some of these symbolisms are sole, crown and light which represents feet, head and another new day respectively. The author used some symbolisms to make the poem more effective and to create imagery. At the end of the poem, it is revealed that Cory committed suicide which proves that having money or material things does not ensure someone’s happiness. The poem’s irony is that the speakers who are less privileged people tend to complain about things they do not have in life and they strongly believe that Richard Cory is happy even if they are not close to him to know everything about him. The speaker in the poem belongs to the lower class while Richard Cory belongs to the upper class.
